The Minister of Labour, Senator the Honourable Dr. Esther Byer-Suckoo will address the launch of the Barbados Workers’ Union’s 75th Anniversary celebrations with the inaugural lecture by historian Dr. David Browne, the principal of Queen’s College at “Solidarity House” on Thursday, starting at 7:00 p.m. Dr. Browne’s lecture will deal with the topic, “Barbados of the early 20th Century and the Impact of the 1937 Social Rebellion on the Development of the Barbados Progressive League and the Barbados Workers’ Union”.

The lecture series, which will end in the month of November, will feature presenters such as retired High Court Judge, the Honourable Sherman Moore, retired BWU General Secretary, Sir Roy Trotman and historians, Ambassador Robert (“Bobby”) Morris and Trevor Marshall. They will examine topics such as the B.W.U.’s role in the lobby for and the enactment of social and labour legislation in Barbados, the development of labour management relations in Barbados, and the role of women in the development of the labour movement in Barbados. Ambassador Morris, a former personal assistant to Sir Frank and Deputy General Secretary, BWU, will assess the life and times of former BWU General Secretary and National Hero, the Rt. Excellent Sir Frank Walcott, this year, being the centenary of Sir Frank’s birth.
