Industrial Relations Climate

Delegates to the Barbados Workers’ Union forthcoming 76th Annual Delegates’ Conference will learn that in the current industrial relations climate, wage-related negotiations are more protracted than usual and, increasingly, companies are citing an inability to increase the workers’ compensation.

Notwithstanding these concerns, the Executive Council has assured the workforce that it is committed to securing the best levels of wages and salaries and conditions of employment for the workers of Barbados.

Among the settlement terms reached between the following companies during the year under review are the following:

  • CIBC/First Caribbean International Bank: Year 1 – 2%, Year 2 – 1.5%, Year 3 – 2.5%, and Year 4 – 3.25%. The agreement date is 1 January 2015 to 31 December 2018;
  • ICBL: 2.5% in Year 1; 2.5% in Year 2; 2.5% in Year 3. the agreement date is 1 January 2016 to 31 December 2018;
  • First Citizens Bank – 2% in Year 1; 3% in Year 2; and 2% in Year 3. The agreement date is 1 January to 31 December 2018;
  • Barbados Mills Limited: Year 1 - 2.5% plus 2% signing bonus; Year 2 – 2.5%; and Year 3 – 2.8%. The agreement date is 1 December 2016 to 30 November 2019;
  • Cable and Wireless: Year 1 - 2% lump sum; Year 2 – 1.5%; Year 3 – 2.5; Year 4 – 2.5%; Year – 3%. The agreement date is 1 April 2013 to 31 March 2018;
  • City of Bridgetown Cooperative Credit Union Limited: Persons paid: - under $3000.00 – lump sum; more than $3000.00 but less than $5000.00 – 3% lump sum; $5000.00 and over – 2% lump sum; Year 1 – Under $3000.00 - 4%; Year 2 – Over $3000.00 – 2%;
  • GCS Limited: Persons paid under $2000.00 - 0%, 3.13% and 3.03 respectively; more than $2000.00 – 0%, lump sum payment and 1.75% respectively. Agreement date is 1 July 2014 – 30 June 2017.
  • Unicomer: Year 1 – 0%; Year 2 – 1.5%; Year 3 – 2.%; Year 4 – 2.5%. The agreement date is 1 April 2013 to 31 March 2017;
  • Hanschell Inniss: Year 1 – 1.5 %. Agreement date is 1 April 2017 to 31 March , 2018;
  • Roberts Manufacturing: Year 1 – 3%, Year 2 – 3% lump sum; and Year 3 – 0%. The agreement date is 1 April 2015 to 31 March 2018.
