Address By Orlando Scott, Assistant General Secretary, BWU At The 3rd AIIC Education Conference and Personal Injury Symposium, Sherbourne Conference Centre, November 3, 2000

We wish to thank Dr. Malcolm Grant and the Board of Directors of the Association of Insurance Institutes of the Caribbean for inviting the Barbados Workers’ Union to participate in this conference. We are glad that back injury, and by extension, occupational health and safety, is part of the subject matters for discussion at this conference, particularly as the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work states that low back disorders will affect between 60% and 90% of people during their working life. When we add to the above the fact that musculoskeletal disorders are Europe’s number one workplace problem, we have sufficient reason to make this subject a priority.
