The following is the maiden address, delivered by Comrade Toni Moore as General Secretary of the Barbados Workers’ Union, at “Solidarity House”, on Saturday, September 6, 2014, the second and final day of the 73rd Annual Delegates’ Conference.

As I stand before you this morning as General Secretary of the Barbados Workers’ Union, I am overflowing with a tremendous sense of humility, but more so gratefulness to the founding fathers of this organisation whose vision and commitment have helped Barbados to develop into the country that we know today; one whose pillars are community, equity and, social justice. I cannot help but acknowledge that it is their effort, their valiant struggle that permits me, a product of the lower class, a woman, a young woman, to stand before you as a leader in this male-dominated calling.
